Broomhill Hospital: a derelict hospital in the Scottish hills

Broomhill Hospital is one of thousands of old institutions across Britain that were built to serve a public purpose and then, quite suddenly, were not needed. It stands derelict in the Scottish landscape — solid, well-built, and slowly giving way to the weather.

The age of the institution

The nineteenth and twentieth centuries were the great age of the institution. Hospitals, asylums, sanatoriums and workhouses were built across Britain on a scale that is hard to imagine now — large, purpose-built complexes designed to house and treat people far from the cities.

Broomhill was part of that tradition. Like many such sites, it was built to last, with thick walls and generous proportions. That solidity is the reason it still stands, decades after its last patients left.

When the patients moved on

In the late twentieth century, the model of care changed. Large institutions were closed in favour of smaller, community-based services, and the old hospitals emptied. Some were converted into housing; some were demolished; many, like Broomhill, were simply left.

An empty institutional building in a wet climate decays quickly. Water finds every weakness, and without heating the fabric of the building never dries. Within a few years, a hospital that had stood for a century can become genuinely dangerous.

Why we record them

These buildings are easy to dismiss as ugly or obsolete, but they hold a great deal of history. Generations were born, treated and died in them. The people who worked there remember them. When they are gone, that memory loses its anchor.

Recording a place like Broomhill is not nostalgia. It is a way of keeping the record straight — of noting that these institutions existed, that they mattered, and that their closure changed lives.
